SYDNEY | The Horse is one of Surry Hills’ iconic pubs, first opening in 1930 as The White Horse Hotel. The pub was refurbished in 2004 with a new bar and a brasserie, and the very recognisable rooftop silver stallion, which was imported from Scotland. Further renovations in 2014 added lounge areas, a restaurant, function room, and a roof top terrace and garden. The most recent revamp in 2017 saw the name change to ‘The Horse’, the venue brightened, murals added from local artist Sindy Sinn, and a revamp of the food and drink offering.

This revamp to the drinks menu has helped turn The Horse into a pub worth seeking out if you’re in Sydney. Across the venue’s 17 taps you’ll find a rotating selection of craft beers from breweries across Australia, along with a few commercial options for those not interested in craft. It’s an assortment of accessible core range beers and more interesting one-off and seasonal brews from the likes of 4 Pines, Moon Dog, and Young Henrys. If you don’t fancy anything on the taps, there’s also a rotating selection of around 40 cans and bottles.

If you’re not into beer, The Horse also stocks a very decent selection of wine and spirits, and makes a range of classic and signature cocktails. The spirits list, which numbers over 100, with a particular focus on whiskey and gin, is well worth a look at.

The kitchen is operated by the folks at Chicken & Sons and all of the favourites you find at their other restaurants, along with a several more pub favourite options are available. Burgers and schnitzels are the highlights, but there’s also fried chicken, skewers, steak, and tacos. Try the ‘Mother’ burger, with buttermilk fried chicken breast, American cheese, lettuce, maple bacon, tomato, and motherclucker hot mayonnaise, or the ‘New York Pizza’ schnitzel with pepperoni, red onion, olive, green peppers & mozzarella.

Whether’s its a rooftop drink, chilling in the lounge, watching sport, or having a meal, the revamped Horse has a lot to offer, and is one of our favourite bars in the area.
