MELBOURNE | If you haven’t been to this part of town for a few years, you might be wondering what happened to cigar den Baranows Lounge. The answer is that it was reborn in 2015 as The Kilburn, a cocktail and whiskey bar. The building dates back to 1887, and the venue makes good use of the building’s heritage values. It’s a spacious building with the tall white walls leading to a beautifully detailed ceiling. Plush blue couches along with seats and table provide lots of seating room, as do the booths and further couches further back, away from the main bar.
The large white marble bar draws your eye towards it, as does the impressive selection of spirits, over 600, behind the bar. Being a bar that specialises in whiskey and cocktails, it should come as no surprise that there are some fantastic spirits to choose from here. In fact the last time we visited, we noticed several Scottish whiskeys that we’ve not seen outside of the UK before. Staff really know their stuff, and will happily explain the characteristics of any of the whiskeys for you, and help you find the right whiskey for you. If you want to try a few things, go for one of the five whisky flights.
If it’s not whiskey your after, there’s a smaller, but still quality, selection of other spirits, along with a few wines and local craft beers. For food, you can go for a ploughman’s platter or charcuterie board, or order pizza from Santoni which is just across the road.
