MELBOURNE | The Napier Hotel is a Fitzroy institution, and has been operating as a pub on the one site since opening in 1866. It’s a true local’s pub, the kind of place you don’t see to often these days. Walk inside the historic building and it’s like stepping back in time. It’s an inviting, cozy venue where people from all stripes of life can be found enjoying a drink and a proper pub meal. Memorabilia from the old Fitzroy Football Club, along with all kinds of curiosities line the walls, while the front bar, pool lounge, dining rooms and courtyard provide ample zones in which to enjoy yourself.
Service is friendly and efficient, and there’s not an ounce of pretension here. Drinks wise it’s classic beers like Carlton Draught and Victoria Bitter on tap along with a very good selection of local craft beers from breweries like Stomping Ground and Bad Shepherd. There’s also a bottled beer selection plus quality wines and spirits.
For food it’s some of the best pub meals in town and on weekends there’s a roast with all the trimmings. There are two items in particular that the Napier is well known for, and both are fantastic. They do a fantastic free range chicken parmigiana with ham or smoked kangaroo, shoestring fries and garden salad. Definitely go for the smoked kangaroo – it’s one of the best parmas in town. The other famous item is the ‘Bogan Burger’ which is filled with steak, chicken schnitzel, caramelised onions, cheese, pineapple, beetroot, egg, potato cake, bacon, lettuce, tomato – make sure you’re hungry before tackling this one.
Modern Fitzroy might be unrecognisable from the Fitzroy of old, but the Napier Hotel has well and truly defied the march of gentrification and provides and experience that everyone can enjoy.
