MELBOURNE | The National Hotel is a gastropub in Richmond that combines the usual modern pub offering with some Asian influences, fitting with the Vietnamese influences on the street in which it is located.
The interior is modern and casual, with wood, concrete and high ceilings on the inside, and a spacious heated beer garden out the back that can be enjoyed year round. Drinks mostly lean towards to accessible end of the spectrum, with something at all price levels to satisfy those looking for a mainstream drink or something a bit different. Most exciting are the Asian-inspired cocktails like the Thai Me Up, which contains Thai basil-infused Wyborowa vodka, luchee liqueur, lime juice, pineapple juice, and Thai basil leaves, and the Long Tom, which combines Chilli-infused Olmeca tequila, agave nectar, Solerno blood orange
liqueur, lime juice, and ruby grapfruit juice.
Asian influences really come through on the food menu, with items like coconut-braised beef short ribs, steamed Chinese broccoli, and shiso leaves, torched salmon with avocado, shiso ponzu, and rice crackers, and tea-smoked duck with nashi pear and fragrant herb salad with ginger dressing.
