MELBOURNE | The Rainbow Hotel is a Fitzroy institution, serving up beer and food to locals and passers-by for over 140 years. Walk inside and you’ll think you’ve stepped into an old school pub that’s always looked the way it does today, but not all is as it seems. The Rainbow Hotel circa 2010 was quite run down and in need of a breath of fresh air when owners Jason and Adam King took over the site. The bar was reshaped, the main bar made more spacious, and the rear beer garden cleaned up. They did a fantastic job – updating the space while making it feel like it always looked this way. The result is a cozy venue with a lot of character.
The revamp wasn’t just superficial either, the beer list was improved significantly, and today there are around 100 different beers between the taps and bottles spanning a wide range of styles from Australia and around the world. Local brewers are always well represented on the taps and there’s always something interesting and new to drink. Food wise, it’s simple pub food done really well. The parmigiana here is one of the best in town and the Rainbow Burger is something you’ll want to eat again and again.
The outside space is bright and spacious, complete with a pool table if you’re up for a game. The bar also has a window that faces the outside so you don’t need to head inside every time you want a drink. There’s always a mixed crowd here and it’s a lot of unpretentious, honest fun.
