MELBOURNE | The Smith is one of Prahran’s historic pub, and has been around since opening in the mid 1850s as the Duke Of York Hotel. It’s undergone several changes over the years, the most recent occurring in 2017 when owners Michael Lambie and Scott Borg (Luy Liu, ex Taxi, Lamaro’s, Circa) closed the venue for 6 months to completely remodel it, including a takeover of the space next door. The result is a venue that retains what we loved about The Smith, and delivers more.

There are a variety of spaces here to suit an assortment of needs. A 120 seat dining room, two function spaces, the main bar, and a large outdoor space with a retractable roof imported from Germany. The interior is brighter and more colourful than before and while it still feels like a pub, it’s a lot fresher. Our favourite part of the venue is the outdoor space though. The transparent roof means that you can enjoy sitting outdoors no matter what the weather is, and the ample use of greenery creates an almost garden-like atmosphere. Add weekend DJs and a license that allows the venue to stay open in to the early hours of the morning and you’re onto a winner.

Drinks wise its a good selection of you affordable, standard beer, wine and spirits, along with craftier options for those seeking something more. Cocktails are a particular highlight, and there are many options on offer here whether its a classic or something more creative.

For food its a modern Australian produce driven menu with a selection of elevated pub classics and dishes with Asian twists. Think Kansas-city pork ribs with house made BBQ sauce, pan fried John Dory with shaved apple slaw, fresh ponzu & lime, and slow roasted lamb shoulder with Moroccan spices, chickpeas, honey & yoghurt.

We always enjoyed the offering at The Smith – good food and drink and an unpretentious vibe, but since the renovations there are even more reasons to visit.
