MELBOURNE | The Stables of Como is a cafe housed in the heritage listed Como Stables, themselves part of the larger Como House and Gardens. The buildings here date back as far 1847, which makes for a unique and charming setting for a cafe.
It might be located just a few minutes walk from busy Chapel Street, but walking through the stables and the surrounding gardens feels like you’re a world away. The stables themselves have been converted into an open, light filled space with a quaint country cottage charm. The menu features dishes created using seasonal produce harvested from the on-site organic kitchen garden and other sustainable, locally sourced produce.
Dishes include things like croissants filled with crunchy peanut butter, raspberry Bonne Maman jam and vanilla bean gelato, and potato hash served with southern BBQ black eyed beans, cotechino pork sausage, and a poached egg. The poke bowl, with spiced tuna, avocado, sesame greens, slaw, black rice, edamame, sriracha mayo, tobiko and chive is also great.
If you have a sweet tooth, the impressive selection of pastries has you covered. Think childhood favourites like home-made wagon wheels, musk sticks, and giant meringue clouds, along with other pastries and a particularly fantastic chocolate brownie. For drinks, it’s espresso based coffee made using beans from Allpress, Larsen & Thompson loose leaf tea, smoothies, juices, milkshakes, local and imported wine, beer and cocktails.
For something a bit different, you can even order a picnic basket (complete with frisbee and rugs) to enjoy in the gardens of pop in for high tea.
