MELBOURNE | The Windsor Alehouse is the revamped reincarnation of former Irish pub, Pint on Punt. Walk inside and the bones of the old venue are there, including the large horseshoe shaped bar in the centre, but it’s all been updated with a more 2016 feel. High tables and stools grace the front area while the rear dining room provides more accommodating chairs and tables, and beer themed decor on the walls.
The taps, which now number 19, feature a range of commercial and independent craft beers. Lion brands like Little Creatures, White Rabbit, James Squire, share the taps with beers from breweries like Brew Cult, Mornington Peninsula and Cavalier. We’re happy to report that there’s good variety in the styles of beer on tap, with beers ranging from accessible core range stuff to more experimental, one-off brews.
Head chef Kevin McLaughlin’s food can be be described as elevated pub food. The parma we tried was perfectly acceptable and the stuffed jalepenos with jackfruit, sweetcorn, and tarragon puree are very tasty. The pulled pork sliders hit the spot nicely too. We’ve heard good things about the burgers here, although have yet to try them ourselves, and there’s always the ‘Nuclear Death Wings’ which the menu claims are 900 times as hot as jalepenos.
If you’re a backpacker, don’t fret – there’s still backpacker’s accommodation upstairs, daily food specials, and still trivia on Tuesdays.
