HOBART | The Winston was your average old school pub for many years (it opened as the Eagle Hawk Inn in 1833), a place for locals who wanted a no fuss venue to hang out in at the northern end of North Hobart. All this changed in 2013, when Kris and Caroline Miles, who lived around the corner, purchased The Winston and set about reinvigorating its offering. Kris spent time working at Beer DeLuxe in Melbourne and is a big craft beer fan, while Caroline, who hails from Baltimore, is a fan of barbecue and American comfort food. The updated Winston reflects the duo’s passions, and is now a very popular pub that’s worth visiting even if you’re not a local.

There are 12 rotating taps of local and international beers, including several brewed by the Winston. Moving to the fridges, and there’s over 100 additional local and international beers. For those not in the mood for beers, there’s a focused range of quality wines and decent spirits too.

The food here is fantastic. Think hot wings, burgers, brisket, pulled pork, tacos, mac & chees, and Jalapeno poppers. All of the Texas style BBQ is smoked on site. If you have a few friends with you, our recommendation is to go for the Big Boy Platter, which gets you a decent serving of baby back ribs, buffalo wings, pulled pork, lamb ribs, maui brisket, fries, coleslaw, and grilled corn for $65.

Thankfully none of these changes have come at the expense of the things that did work about the old Winston. It’s still locals focused, unpretentious, and draws a diverse crowd of all ages and walks of life. There’s live music, a pool table, and pinball machines, and all up it’s a whole lot of fun.
