MELBOURNE | The Wood Samaritan is a Canadian cabin themed bar in Brunswick East, in the space formerly occupied by Malaysian restaurant Satay Anika. The theme of the venue is inspired by co-owner Lauren Turner’s birthplace Edmonton, Canada. It feels the part, like a cozy wood cabin full of trinkets, worn in furniture, wood paneled ceilings, and wallpaper.
The theme carries across to the drinks list, with an assortment of venue appropriate cocktails on offer. The pumpkin spice old fashioned features a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves and allspice, mixed with bourbon, bitters and orange peel, while the PB&J Bourbon Negroni features Buffalo Trace and peanut butter stirred with strawberry jam, Antica Formula vermouth and Campari. Both are delicious. For those not looking for cocktails, there’s five beer and two wines on tap, along with more cans of both in the fridges. From 4pm to 6pm on weekdays, all cans are half price.
The food menu features an assortment of bar friendly dishes inspired by the bars of North America. Think mac and cheese croquettes, fried chicken sliders, popcorn cauliflower, and jalapeno poppers.
Whether its in the main bar, dining space, lounge room like upstairs, or surprisingly spacious courtyard out back, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy your time at his homely new spot. The Wood Samaritan might be new, but it already feels like a local’s bar that’s been around for years.
