MELBOURNE | Thunder Road Brewing Company have been making beers in their Brunswick brewery since 2010, but it was only this year when they finally got all the approvals required to open the brewery taproom. Owner Philip Withers was into good beer long before starting his own brewery, and over the years has turned Thunder Road into one of the most recognisable, and sometimes controversial (due to their willingness to take on the big boys like CUB), craft breweries in town.

Unlike a lot of craft breweries in Melbourne, the main focus at Thunder Road is accessible gateway beers – the kind of beers that will appear to those who like drinking VB, XXXX, and Carlton Draught, and are maybe looking to try something new and independent, but not too unfamiliar. Popular beers from Thunder Road’s core range include the Full Steam Pale Lager, Collingwood Draught, Hop Star, and Brunswick Bitter.

Craft beer heads need not turn away though, as the brewery does also do seasonal and specialty brews at the tap room. For example an Imperial Kolsch aged in Viogner wine barrels, and a Carribean aged rum lager. Go for a tasting paddle if you want to try a few things.

The space itself is set smack bang in the middle of the brewery. It’s a warehouse and the tanks, brewing equipment, and bags of malt and hops are all around for visitors to see. At the front is a small outdoor courtyard, which features a sleek, silver, space-age looking replica Airstream caravan helmed by chef Paul Clarke. This is where the food is made, the menu of which features Mexican favourites like tacos, nachos, and corn, along with fried chicken and a few other items. The kitchen and the bar are run by Jon Farrell and Brendan Kennedy, who also run Abbotsford’s Lulie Street Tavern.
