LONDON | Fun, kitsch and unpretentious – Tonteria is Sloane Square’s underground Mexican-themed hidden gem. Founded in 2012, Tonteria (meaning ‘Nonsense’ in Spanish) has gone from strength to strength in cementing a name for itself as on of the go-to nightspots in Chelsea, Sloane Square. A-List clientele that have been spotted here include names such as Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Tom Hardy and royalty (Prince Harry and Prince William!)

The basement bar has an urbane feel to it albeit it being cosy with a colourful lounge with rustic wooden tables, muted walls and an intimate dance floor space. The main stand out feature is a “Day of the Dead” skull-themed DJ booth on the dance floor that demands attention within the room. It’s a Thursday evening when we visit and the bar is packed with a mixture of artsy creative and young professionals having a bite to eat ahead of the exciting night that awaits them.

If it’s not the achingly cool tunes and vibe, it will certainly be the smell of alluring foods that will draw you in to the winning Tonteria formula – blending Latin themed influences to create innovative and modern sharing plates. There’s mouthwatering gourmet tapas dishes such as the moreish crispy calamari, delectable burger sliders, burritos with edgy flavours, tasty tacos and churros – all the plates are winners, with the calamari being the standout dish.

Service flows all night thanks to the charming staff who, on a warm summer’s night, donned fitting football outfits for the FIFA World Cup. On any other occasion, you can find them adorned in outrageous outfits to create spectacular and sometimes controversial shows for guests. With this spot, guests are always in full suspense as you never know what’s about to happen next!

One thing for sure is Tonteria definitely excel on their drinks – in particular the frozen margaritas. All refreshing, zingy and confidently well made. How can we forget the Tequila train – a lavish heightened serving of tequila shots on a toy train. The bar offers bottle service and stocks an extensive list of premium spirits as well as a Mexican mud bath which is a selection of frozen margaritas served alongside a bowl of chocolate with churros and fruit to dip into it.

You can catch international DJs, immersive performances such as the eye-popping Do Not Disturb themed Fridays one of their more risque. Then there’s Muertos Mondays which kick-starts your week in the most unforgettable way. Throw in some of their top-notch Latin themed plates and wash it all down with a refreshing signature Frozen Margarita cocktail or House special, such as the Mexican Wall or Don Julio, to get your fiesta started!
