LONDON | The Tower of London is one of those most recognisable of tourist spots in London, and is well worth a visit regardless of the sort of travel that you are into. Officially named Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, the old castle dates back to 1066 with the White Tower, the large tower in the centre, dating back to 1078.
To say that there’s a lot of history in these walls is an understatement. The Tower was primarily used as a royal palace, an armoury, a powerful fortress, a prison, a zoo, a barracks and a jewel house. Despite popular literature, was not a place where torture and execution generally happened (this tended to occur at nearby Tower Hill). Having said that Anne Boleyn, along with six others, were executed here, and Guy Fawkes was tortured here.
One of the most popular attractions at the Tower of London are the Crown Jewels, which have been on display publicly at the Tower since 1669, but have been held here since the reign of Henry III (1216–1272). The collection includes over 24,000 gems, including the Koh-i-Noor Indian diamond, one of the largest in the world. Iconic Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) live at the tower and run tours , giving visitors insight into the history of the Tower and the various rooms and structures.
