MELBOURNE | True North opened in Coburg in 2013, but somehow we only recently caught wind of its existence. A travesty given that the cafe/bar is now one of our favourite spots for a feed and a drink in this part of town. Owners Nadia Camus and Brett O’Riley set out to create a venue where they could serve the kind of food that they love to eat, with great tunes, in a space that they’d like to hang out in with their mates. There’s no pretension here, and everyone’s welcome into this real local’s place.

O’Riley’s background is in music, and the music here is eclectic with a rock bent – Rose Tattoo, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, AC-DC and the like. You might not think that hard rock goes well with the relaxed, casual atmosphere of the place, but it does. The whole venue feels like a random mish mash of things that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The food is inspired by North and Latin America (Camus’ mum is from Chile), and contains lots of tasty options like huevos rancheros, a breakfast burrito, and one of our favourites, the Colombian Eggs Benedict which is two poached eggs with slow cooked pork and chipotle hollandaise, served on house made corn arepas with a chilli and lime apple slaw. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Camus’ Blackberry Belle American-style sweet pies of the day are must. Think apple, rhubarb, cherry, and pumpkin – all served with double cream. The menu caters well to vegetarians and vegans too, with loads of options available.

At night, it’s all about burgers – try the The Mustard Tiger, with teriyaki chicken, Kewpie mayo and iceberg lettuce. On Thursday nights, Chilli time is what you want to get involved in for dinner.

On the drinks side of things, there’s coffee during the day, brewed any way you can imagine with locally roasted Coffee Supreme beans from Abbotsford (try the fizzy cold brew). For alcohol, it’s local beers and seasonal cocktails – the True North Margerita, with tequila, house made pineapple, and jalapeño fresca served with a paprika salt rim and fresh cucumber, is always a good idea.
True North is the kind of place that doesn’t really care what’s on trend, and is happy to walk to the beat of its own drum. The vibe is great, service friendly, music awesome, and food and drinks tasty. It took us four years to find, and we’re glad we did. Now that you know, make sure you don’t wait as long before you visit.
