MELBOURNE | Woodford Reserve Old Fashioned Week is back this November with some of the best bars across Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, and Brisbane serving up innovative twists on the classic cocktail in celebration.

I was invited to a bit of a bar crawl with the Woodford team in Melbourne to sample some of this city’s offerings and, being a lover of the Old Fashioned and the three bars involved, it’s no surprised that I was impressed.

Woodford Reserve award-winning American whiskey boasts a taste profile of more than 200 flavours, providing bartenders with the ideal base to create the perfect concoction to celebrate this classic cocktail. With so many flavours to play with, the task for bartenders is to imagine what a bourbon can be.

John Ross-Jones and his team at GoGo Bar kicked off proceedings with the “This is the one!” Old Fashioned, a cocktail that has been a year in the making. Back in 2018 they hand-picked a barrel of Woodford Reserve that had the flavour profile they liked, and this formed the base for their creation. With kinoto sake, applewood smoked gula melaka, coconut, honeyed apricot and hickory bitters, it goes great with the Chin Chin food that they have on offer.

Next it was off to hidden bar Manchuria for their Japanese inspired “White Old Fashioned” with sake and cherry blossom. Finally, the it was the fantastic Emerald Peacock rooftop where oolong tingture, honey, orange and tonka bean syrup are being used to create an Old Fashioned with a Taiwanese twist, in a nod to the head mixologist’s background.

These are just three of the Old Fashioned twists being created by mixologists at almost 200 bars across the country. Whether you’re a seasoned Old Fashioned drinker, or someone looking to give the cocktail a try, there’s never been a better chance to try one.
