MELBOURNE | Two Tall Chefs is a quaint cafe and cheese shop located in Nicholson Street Village, Carlton North. Chef and owner Monte Hudson has created a homely venue which celebrates artisan cheese, small goods, boutique wines and beers from Australia and around the world. The cheese selection is spectacular which includes a range of difficult to find items such as unpasteurized soft and hard cheeses. These cheeses are available to take home as are a range of terrines, pates and preserves that Monte and his team make on site. The use of smallgoods and cheese is also integrated into the cafe menu which consists of a combination of French and Italian inspired dishes.
One of the things that we love most about Two Tall Chefs is Monte’s passion that’s evident in everything that he does. He loves chatting to customers, often coming to the table to have a chat about the food he’s been cooking, a new cheese he’s got in, or just anything else. When we visited there was a steady stream of regulars coming in to buy cheese and there was a real community vibe about the place.
The house made gnocchi with a red wine braised duck ragu topped with reggiano is highly recommended. The gnocchi is light and fluffy which helps it soak up the rich, intense sauce. The house-made pork, veal and truffle sausages are also a crowd favourite. If you’re in the mood for something a little lighter, check out the charcuterie plate, which has a lovely selection of house made terrines, rillette, pate, cured meats, preserves and char grilled sourdough bread. If you’re not in the mood for a meal, then there’s always the option of one of Two Tall chefs cheese boards and a glass of wine.
The cafe is licensed all day, and if you head out the back on the weekend you’ll find the courtyard, which is a great space when the weather’s right to enjoy your cheese and wine.
