LONDON | For nearly thirty years, Vicino has been serving authentic Italian food to residents of Parsons Green. We were invited to dine here, and with fresh lobsters from Billingsgate Fish Market, yummy pasta, a good selection of wine, and tiramisu on the menu, it wasn’t hard to say yes.

Thankfully the promise lived up to expectations, and we enjoyed a pleasant evening of fresh, authentic food in an atmospheric setting. We started with grilled prawns & asparagus skewers, and calamari & courgette strips. The prawn skewers are served with arrabiatta sauce, while calamari is served with a tartare sauce – both are beautifully fresh and appetising.

The star of the meal, of course, was the special of the day, the dish we were looking foward to most – whole lobster with linguine white wine and lobster bisque. The lobster at Vicino is fresh from London’s Billingsgate Fish market – sweet, meaty and fulfilling. The linguine is looked perfectly al dente, generously sauced, and a perfect companion to the lobster. Our second main was grilled sea bass with vegetables & balsamic-herb dressing, which boasted the same level of freshness as the preceding dishes. A Toscana white, Vermentino IGT Costa, was the recommended wine and it matched both our mains perfectly.

For dessert we couldn’t go past the tiramisu, and we were impressed by how close it was to the tiramisu served in our favourite restaurant in Florence, Italy. The perfect texture an balance of sweetness and coffee intensity

The restaurant is warm and welcoming, dotted with cheerful decorations without being too busy. Food is served quickly and attentively, and it’s clear by the end of your visit why this local’s favourite has been around for so long. Before leaving, we took a peak at Vicino’s Christmas special – which includes beef tartare with avocado, linguine with monk fish, and grilled lamb in orange mint sauce – and will definitely be back to try it.
