MELBOURNE | The Village Melbourne is a venue of 2 halves – there’s a restaurant inside that bears many of the hallmarks of its prior incarnation as the Belgian Beer Cafe and offers a substantial, bistro menu and there’s the outside beer garden with a more casual focus and menu. If it’s a nice day and you’re looking for a place to relax, Village Melbourne offers one of Melbourne’s best outdoor spaces and we’ve been here several times for a few drinks with friends. Recently we were invited to check out the offering at Village Melbourne and decided to try the causal food in the beer garden as it was a lovely summer’s day and there wasn’t a chance that we were going to waste it indoors.

There are 2 main draw cards that Village Melbourne has. One is the spacious, casual beer garden and the second is the craft beer menu. There are bars inside and outside and while you can only order food from the inside and outside venues in their respective spaces, you can order drinks from either of the bars. The inside bar is more fully stocked, however both offer a decent range of local and international craft beers on tap, as well as wines and some impressive spirits.

Food wise it’s pizzas, burgers, salad and charcuterie on offer outside. Nothing revolutionary but solid pub food that delivers what you expect. What’s perhaps unexpected is that the less pub-like options are actually the standouts here. The heirloom tomato salad with goats cheese mousse, olive tapenade, balsamic onion jam and micro basil is fantastic. The charcuterie plate is top notch too. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more “pubish”, the burgers are decent, however the pizzas need work.

We also recorded an episode of our side project, Brunswick Beer Collective live at Village Melbourne, which you can listed to here. We visited as part of a large group and received a discount on our meal but paid for the majority of it.
