MELBOURNE | It’s no secret that we love American BBQ at The City Lane, so we’re pretty happy that the Yak Ales Melbourne BBQ Festival will be returning to Flemington Racecourse this year. On Sat 4 and Sun 5 of Feb, you’ll be able to eat BBQ from some of Melbourne’s best BBQ restaurants, as well as try the smoked meat goodness from a few US pitmasters who have flown down for the festival. On top of this, there will be barbecue cooking and butchery demos, a barbecue cook-off sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (“KCBS”), bands, equipment and product exhibitors showcasing the latest local and international products on the market, and more.

Special guest, world championship pitmaster and restaurateur John David Wheeler, head cook for the Natural Born Grillers barbecue team and co-pitmaster of the Memphis Barbecue Company, will be bringing Memphis-style BBQ to the festival, as will 76 time Grand Championship award winner Jim Johnson. Also flying in from the US is Kevin Blusdo, owner of Blusdo’s BBQ in Los Angeles and San Antone in Melbourne, and Leslie Roark Scott and Craig Verhage from the award winning Ubons Restaurant in Yazoo City, Mississippi.

Local favourites this year include Dexter BBQ, San Antone, Silver Creek Smokers, Smokin’ Barry’s, Burn City Smokers, Bluebonnet BBQ, Fancy Hank’s, and Southside Smokers.

The KCBS team will be holding certified barbecue-judging classes, where students will be taught what to look for in award-winning competition-style barbecue, with the chance to judge on Sunday 5 February, and Jim Johnson will be running a series of barbecue cooking classes.

If you love American BBQ, and want to learn more about the art of smoking meat, or just want to enjoy some mighty fine food, then the Yak Ales Melbourne BBQ Festival is something you won’t want to miss. We know we’ll be there.
