SYDNEY | Young Henrys Newtown only started in 2012 but it feels like they’ve been around for a lot longer than that due to the fact that so many of us are now so familiar with their beers. It all started when their application to open a brewery in Surry Hills was knocked back by the council. Luckily it did, because everything about Young Henrys feels perfect at its Newtown location just off King Street. The brewery and brewpub is located in an old warehouse and as soon as you enter you feel like there’s something a bit special about this place. It’s always full of locals from all walks of life, and it feels like there’s a real community spirit about the place. Kind of like a backyard party where everyone’s invited. The staff are always friendly and the brewers are generally keen to have a chat if they’re not busy brewing.

It’s all about a core range of solid, accessible beers, along with a few experimental, limited brews on the taps at any given time. The core range consists of the Real Ale, Natural Lager, Hop Ale, Cloudy Cider and the Newtowner. Our favourite is the Newtowner, an Australian Pale Ale brewed using Victoria’s Secret, Cascade and Galaxy hops. It’s one of the most popular beers with locals and an easy drink on a hot Sunday afternoon. Keep an eye out for the collaboration beers too. Young Henrys often team up with local artists and restaurants to brew special beers and you never know what you might find. Paraphernalia around the brewery gives a hint of collaborations past – AC/DC, PVT, Frenzel Rhomb, and You Am I to name a few.

There’s no food available, but there’s generally a food truck or stall outside to order something from if you’re hungry.

Young Henrys’ gin “Noble Cut” which is distilled at the brewery is also fantastic however due to licensing restrictions you can’t actually order or drink it at the brewery. Oh well, another beer then?
