MELBOURNE | 2 Brothers Brewery was one of the first microbreweries to set up shop in Melbourne’s South East when they opened in Moorabbin in 2007. In case the name didn’t give it away, it was founded by two brothers, Andrew and Dave Ong, who discovered craft beer while living and working in the United States as an aerospace engineer and a physiotherapist respectively.
They gave up their day jobs and purchased some brewing equipment from the bankrupt Times Square Brewery, in New York City. The equipment was shipped to Melbourne, and today it forms the backbone of the brewery. It’s a casual, industrial space with a decent amount of seating and tables inside and out the front. There’s live music at night on Thursday to Saturday, and get down to the brewery on Thursdays at 6:30pm if you want a free brewery tour.
A 2016 refresh saw a new 12 tap system installed at the brewery, and on those taps you’ll find 2 Brothers’ core range of beers, along with some seasonal and limited brews, and their cider too. One of our favourites is the Growler, a 4.7% American Brown Ale with a biscuit malt character and notes of chocolate and dark fruits. Meanwhile the light and refreshing Gypsy Pear Cider goes down a treat on a hot summer’s day. The Magic Pudding, a seasonal 9.1% Dessert Beer, is another favourite with all kinds of Christmas like dessert flavours combining to form something delicious.
For food, there’s a small bar snack menu available, as well as a rotating selection of food trucks during peak times for those who want something more substantial.
