MELBOURNE | 8bit Melbourne CBD is the highly anticipated CBD outpost of Footscray’s popular burger joint 8bit. 8bit is one of our favourite burger joints at The City Lane, but a lot of people haven’t visited because of its out of the way (for some) Footscray location. Unlike the original, the second 8bit is located in perhaps one of the most accessible spots in Melbourne – the former Asian convenience store space on the corner of Swanston and Little Bourke Streets.
Step inside and the fitout takes the same cues as the original – 1980s and 1990s video games. There’s even an arcade machine which you can actually play games on.
The menu is the same as the Footscray branch and this is no bad thing. All of the favourites burgers and hot dogs are here including our order of the 8bit with cheese (Beef, Tomato, Lettuce, Red Onion, Pickles, Mustard, Cheese, Ketchup, 8bit Sauce – $9.50), After Burner (Beef, Tomato, Red Onion, Lettuce, Cheese, Chilli Sauce, Jalapeños, Mustard, Chipotle Mayo – $10.50), Golden Axe (Crispy Fried Chicken, Cheese, Sriracha Mayo, Slaw – $11.50), fries ($3.50) and potato gems ($4.00).
One of our group was an 8bit virgin and he was very impressed with his burger. For the rest of us, our meal met our expectations, tasting exactly like the food we love from the Footscray branch.
Owner Shayne McCallum isn’t re-inventing the wheel with his second 8bit, he’s simply taking what works in Footscray and replicating it in a more central, accessible location. Now there’s not excuse to see what all the fuss over 8bit’s burgers is about.
