MELBOURNE | Moon Dog Brewing was founded in 2011 by brothers Josh and Jake Uljans and their friend Karl van Buuren 2010, and from the very beginning they were causing waves by brewing all kinds of interesting beers, rather than focusing on a core range of pale ales and IPAs. Some of the early releases included beers like Perverse Sexual Amalgam, a tart and sour wild black ale full of funky yeasts, Henry Ford’s Girthsome Fjord, a hoppy Belgian India brown ale, and the very first Black Lung, a barrel-aged smoked stout with peated malts.

These days there is a core range, owing to the fact that you kind of need one to actually make money in the independent brewing range, but that doesn’t mean that the experiements have stopped. In fact, the team at Moon Dog are brewing just as many interesting beers as every before, and you can always try the newest ones at their Abbotsford brewpub, which opened in 2014.

Located down a dodgy looking industrial side street, just past a brothel, this warehouse conversion is surprisingly cozy, with reclaimed communal tables and couches surrounded by shelves and walls full of an eclectic mix of paraphernalia. There’s a table tennis table which comes out when the place isn’t totally full, and a pull down projector screen for live sports. To the side, is a bookshelf which opens up to the expanded brewery next door.

Across the eight taps you’ll find a few of the core range beers, along with whatever is new and interesting at the time. Out of the core range, our favourite is the Mack Daddy, a 5% dark ale with a surprisingly strong hop character. On the specialty side of things, we’re big fans of the Splice of Heaven, which tends to pop up during the summer, and is an IPA that uses lactose to mimic the vanilla of Splice ice creams and tropical hops to mimic the outside bit.

There’s free popcorn at the bar when you get your drink, and if you’re hungrier, a food van out the front selling a decent range of tasty pizzas.
