MELBOURNE | Bar Liberty was our favourite new bar in 2016, and continues to be one of our favourite places to eat and drink in Melbourne. Venture behind the venue to the courtyard however, and you’ll find something surprising. Instead of creating an outdoor area that’s an extension of Bar Liberty, the owners have created Drinkwell, which is a venue in its own right.
This outdoor bar is a casual spot which seats around 25-30 people across a number of wooden seats and tables. Fake grass, real plants, and street art on both the venue’s walls and the laneway on which Drinkwell resides give it a very Fitzroy appropriate feel. The fact that it’s dog friendly too adds to the space’s casual atmosphere.
Like Bar Liberty, the focus at Drinkwell is on quality drinks and food, but the menu for both is much simpler and smaller. For drinks there’s two beers on tap, a few more in cans, and a few interesting wines and bottled cocktails. For food it’s an ever changing selection of flatbreads, dips and snacks. Think fluffy, charred, almost naan like sourdough flatbread topped with a combination of things like hummus, felafel, broccoli, fried salami, spiced minced lamb, salad, and stracciatella. It’s all very tasty stuff, and there are gluten free and vegan options available all the time.
It’s the perfect spot when you want to enjoy the outdoors, or are looking for something a bit simpler than Bar Liberty.
