Impi Brewers, Wangara

PERTH | Impi Brewers is an independent Western Australian brewery, inspired by classic beers and modern brewing trends around the world. The brewery was founded in 2017 by head brewer Jason Marais, his parents Leon and Delia, brother Leon Jr, and his partner Bron. Together, they’re across all aspects of the brewery’s operation – a true family affair.

Jason and his side of the family hail from South Africa. The name ‘Impi’ is a Zulu word commonly referring to a group Zulu warriors. The brewery’s logo, an African water buffalo with a crown of hops.

The South African influence can be found not just in the name and logo, but in the beers. Along with familiar styles and flavours, there’s a Rooibos Saison, South African IPA, and Afrikaner dessert-inspired Helles. At the taproom, housed directly inside the operating brewery, you can find whatever Impi’s currently brewing on tap, along with a whole lot of beers to take away in the fridges. Spirits distilled on site will be coming soon.

Tasting paddles are offered, and you can choose six 100ml pours of whatever you like from the taps. You can also get bigger 285ml pours, along with squealer and growler refills. I recommend some of the unique South African inspired brews, along with Impi’s fantastic IPAs and their barrel aged beers. The Oak Ness Monster, an oak-aged Wee Heavy, is a must try if it’s on when you visit.

For food, there’s a small selection of snacks behind the bar. If you want something more substantial, you’re free to order in food.
