PERTH | Baby Mammoth is a South African inspired restaurant in Northbridge, run by South African owner Ryan Lambson and his Indonesian/Chinese wife, Tania. The menu features an assortment of small share plates, and more substantial dishes that capture the cultural melting post that is South Africa and its food. It’s a small, narrow space with exposed brick walls, bright paintings and artwork. It’s a bit of a mish mash, but works well to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Bunny chow, a dish that originated in the Durban Indian community, is a South African fast food consisting of a hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry, and appears on the menu along with things like house-smoked duck breast, mutton and lentil curries, and the enticing pulled pork, donut, beer cheese sauce, jalapeno slaw.

For drinks, the focused wine menu features quality drops from mostly Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, while the creative cocktails are made with made with in house beer vermouths, syrups and reductions. The real highlight though is the beer menu, which changes daily and contains three taps and over 60 bottles. There’s something for everyone on the beer list, including some hard-to-find bottles. What this means is that as well as being a great restaurant, Baby Mammoth is also one of Perth’s best craft beer venues, and the kind of place where you can happily pop in for a few drinks even if you’re not hungry.

Combine all of the above with some friendly service and passionate staff, and you’ve got more than enough reason to visit multiple times.
