MELBOURNE | Costanza is in the building! Beer, Wine & Calzone Melbourne instantly made us think of that Seinfeld episode, and this new CBD restaurant delivers exactly the kind of no-nonsense goodness that drove Larry David in George Steinbrenner wild. The name tells you everything you need to know about the place with beer (although admittedly there’s less beer than we’d hoped) , wine and calzone (and pizza) being what it’s all about. Owner Jerome Dadon has teamed up with his father Albert Dadon and brought in Italian pizza maestro and Accademia Italiana della Pizza lecturer Marino Maffi to run the kitchen. Pizzas and calzones are thin crust creations cooked fast at high temperature in the heavy duty electric pizza oven and topped/filled with a variety of ingredients, both local and Italian.

Maffi has brought with him an 80 year old yeast starter for the pizza bases, and they are beautifully springy and crispy. We loved the Primavera pizza (buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomato, San Daniele ham, rocket & parmesan) as well as the surprisingly well balanced at not overly sweet dessert calzone of nanana, Nutella & custard. Wines are affordable and local as are the beers. There are also more spirits and cocktail than you’d expect. Salads, sides, starters and a few pasta options round out the menu.

And for those of you who have no idea what we were talking about earlier…
