MELBOURNE | The Elizabeth Street location of Fitzroy-born hot chicken chain Belle’s Hot Chicken opened in 2018 and offers what diners have come to love about Belle’s with a few twists that set it apart from the other locations.

Housed at street level in the Galleria shopping mall, the 100 seat venue has an American diner feel with lots of dark wood, red leather booths, and retro diner-style tables and seats, mirrors, and textured concrete. Combined with the venue’s low lighting and long, narrow space, it certainly looks the part.

Anyone who has eaten at any of the other Belle’s locations will know what to expect food wise. The star is the hot chicken, available as tenders, drumsticks, or wings (there’s also fish and mushroom), in your choice of heat. There’s six heat levels ranging from Southern (mild), through to the formerly limited but now always available extreme heat of “Sex Panther”. Sides are things like mac & cheese, fries, and slaw, and there’s also a few salads and snacks, including the location-only chicken nuggets. Most importantly, the Belle’s Chicken Sandwich, one of our favourite chicken sandwiches in town, is available.

For drinks it’s a natural wine focus, with all kinds of interesting funky wines – pet nats, orange wines and the like. There’s also your more familiar styles of wine along with craft beers, spirits and cocktails..
