MELBOURNE | Boatrocker Brewing Co. was founded in Braeside by Matt and Andrea Houghton in 2009, and had some early successes with beers like Alpha Queen (a hoppy, 5% American Pale Ale), Hop Bomb (a 6.5% IPA packed full of hops), and of course the first Ramjet (a 10.2% Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout). In 2013 the Braeside brewery opened, and in 2015 Made By HAND group, the original founders of Little Creatures, also owners of Perth’s Petition Beer Corner) and Hippocampus Distillery, became investors in the brewery.

The investment allowed Boatrocker to purchase a barrel room large enough to age up to 70,000 litres of beer in 300 former wine, bourbon and whisky barrels at any point in time. Since then, the profile of Boatrocker has skyrocketed. Ramjet continues to be one of the most anticipated annual beer releases in Australia, and recently some of the other fruits of the barrel ageing program started to show their faces in the form of the “Barrel Aged Quintet”. These are serious beers – take for example the Wildecherry, which is a blend of 12, 18 and 24 month Brettanomyces yeast barrel fermented Flanders red style ales, further fermented with fresh Morello cherries added to the mix for the final 2 months.

Matt is a huge fan of Belgian style beers so expect to see more experimentation with Belgian styles, funky yeasts, natural ferments, and barrel ageing in the future. If you’re not into this sort of thing don’t worry – the barrel room, which is also the taproom is a large, casual space that’s well suited to long afternoon sessions with friends, and there are always accessible core range beers on tap. Think things like the aforementioned Alpha Queen, Miss Pinky, a 3.4% Raspberry Berliner Weisse that will change your idea of what a low ABV beer can be, and the Pale Ale, a 4.4% Summer Ale.

Tasting paddles are available for those who want to try a few different things, and staff are always more than happy to talk you through what’s on offer on the taps and in bottles, as well as just chat about beer. For those who are feeling peckish, there’s a selection of charcuterie and pizzas available.
