MELBOURNE | Brunswick East Wine Store is a real local’s spot that specialises in fantastic wines to either take away or drink on site. The man you’ll see behind the register/bar most often is owner Tim Cohen, who is a Brunswick local himself and, after over twenty years of working in wine (including a stint as the sommelier at Vue de Monde), decided to open his own wine shop with his wife Erin.

There’s no pretension here and Tim’s philosophy when it comes to the wines he sells is simple – it has to taste good (Tim tries every wine that’s stocked) and represent value for money. There’s a focus on minimal intervention, small independent producers who have a real sense of ‘product of place’ and as a result you are always guaranteed to find something interesting, be it local or international.

Based on an Italian-style enoteca, wines are available by the glass or bottle. If you want to drink your bottle at the shop then you just pay $10 on top of the shelf price and you’re good to go. As for the wines available by the glass, Tim takes an interesting approach. When Sunday rolls along the first four reds and first four whites chosen by customers become the wines that will be available by the glass for the rest of the week. It’s a great idea and means that you never know what might be available, rest assured though it will be a tasty wine.

If you’re after a bite to eat, Brunswick East Wine Store offers a short menu filled with cured meats, cheese, pickled seafood, olives and other tasty bits and pieces.

Even if you’re not a wine drinker you’re covered pretty well at Brunswick East Wine Store. There are two fridges dedicated to craft beer and cider with a rotating list of local and international bottles that puts many pubs to shame. There’s even the odd spirit available here and there too. No pretention, good drinks, great service, and real passion – what more could you want?
