PACHAR | Cerveceria del Valle Sagrado (Sacred Valley Brewery) is a craft brewery located in the most unlikely of places – a 10 minute drive from the small village of Ollantaytambo in Peru’s Sacred Valley. It was founded by Peruvian Juan Mayorga and American Joe Giammatteo, who met in high school in the USA. After graduating from college with a marketing degree, Mayorga returned to Peru. Giammatteo meanwhile, became a brewer, working at Russian River Brewing Company and Oakshire Brewing.
Mayorga and Giammatteo remained in contact during this time and in 2013 Giammatteo, his wife Louisa moved to Peru. The trio teamed up with another friend, Alex Ball, and the following year Sacred Valley Brewery was born. The brewery has nine of its own beers on tap, along with a house brewed soda. The beers here have won many awards, and cover a variety of styles from IPAs to Wild Beers, Pale Ales to Goses and more. They’re brewed using high quality, local ingredients, and the best in brewing know how.
The Be Kind Pale Ale is delicious and refreshing, while the Buho Negro is a delicious 6.4% American Black IPA. Keep an eye out for seasonal beers with a uniquely Peruvian twist, like the Roja Con Ayrampo – a 5.6% ABV Red Ale with ayrampo (red sierra cactus seed) and caramel malts. Tasting paddles are available, so you can try a variety of things, but do be aware that it’s cash only.
The food list is short but very tasty. It includes American food with a few local twists. Think burgers, chicken wings and BBQ meats.
Tours are available upon request, subject to availability, and take around 15 minutes.
