LONDON | Crate Brewery Hackney Wick is located in a former industrial area on the banks of the River Lea and is an upcycled venue that’s fitting in with the current “on trend” East London vibe. The bar is made of old railway sleepers, the seating has been formed out of ladders and ratchet straps while old bed springs are used as light fittings. As we said, it’s all very on trend, and many of the articles we’ve read about Crate make a point to talk about “hipsters” and other stereotypes. At the end of the day though, why you’re really coming to Crate is for the beer, pizza and atmosphere.
The beer at Crate is all brewed on site, with the tanks and associated brewing equipment on display for all to see. A decent range of craft beers are on offer here, spanning the full range of expected light and dark styles. All of the beers at Crate are decent, but if you’re only having one we highly recommend the crisp and refreshing Golden Ale, which is an absolute cracker for something that’s only 3.8% ABV. Also keep an eye out for the limited edition runs, which are brewed in Crate’s small five-barrel brewing kit and are generally beers that are a bit more unusual and innovative that those in the core range. If beer isn’t your thing, there’s even a focused range of white, red and rose wines on offer.
Pizzas have thin, crispy bases and use toppings that are a bit non-traditional but tasty which is all that matters – the perfect accompaniment to beer. We’re big fans of the Middle Eastern Lamb pizza with the simpler but still super tasty Spicy Salami coming in a close second.
Good beer (and wine), tasty pizzas and a funky East London warehouse venue. What’s not to like?
