MELBOURNE | A few weeks ago I was invited to Da Long Yi Hot Pot 大龙燚火锅 on Elizabeth Street. It’s the first Melbourne outpost of the Chengdu based Hot Pot Chain that’s been expanding globally in recent years. There’s over 200 of them in China alone.

The table was treated to as assortment of dishes from the menu, such as with the highlight, of course, being the hot pot. Being an event targeted at a wider audience meant I wasn’t able to try my usual preference of offal. More “accepted” dishes and cuts of meat were the go on this night, although it should be noted that a full assortment of wonderful offal is on the menu.

What I enjoyed on the night was very delicious though, don’t get me wrong. Think richly marbled marbled tiles of Wagyu rib, New Zealand lamb shaved prosciutto-thin, and the Kurobuta pork belly from Japan. All quality. Broth wise, it was a split pot of spicy Sichuan and mild mushroom. Both tasty, but it wasn’t long before our table of four was pledging exclusivity to the Sichuan side of the pot.

Overall, it was the quality of the ingredients that impressed me most at Da Long Yi, and the extensive selection of spices and sauces on offer at the condiment station. Definitely a place I want to return to and get my offal on.
