MELBOURNE | Dainton Family Brewing are located in Carrum Downs, in a part of Melbourne that’s slowly seeing more and more breweries set up shop. While it’s not the most central of breweries to visit in Melbourne, those who do venture out to the family run brewery are treated to some of the best beers that are currently being brewed in Melbourne, including some award winning drops.

The large warehouse is where all of the action happens – the 30 hectolitre steam powered brewing system is out the back behind the bar, and the spacious interior has an assortment of seating, tables, stools, and the obligatory table tennis table. It’s a fun, casual space, the reflects the ethos of the owners, who don’t take themselves too seriously. Case in point, when they advertised for a sales rep, they put an ad out for an “Intergalactic Fun & Beer Legend”, which is what the role is still called to this day.

Of course the most important thing when it comes to a brewery is the beer, and across the brewery’s 12 taps you’ll find a mixture of Dainton’s core range beers, seasonal and one off creations, and guest beers from breweries who make beers they like. Our favourites from the core range are the IPA (formerly Insane Uncle IPA), a 6.0% West Coast IPA with strong pine and citrus notes, and the Red Eye Rye, a 4.8% Red Rye Ale with strong roasted malt and caramel flavours. When it comes to specialties, the Manhattan, a Barrel Aged Belgian Rye Ale annual release, is our favourite. The 2016 clocked in at 9.8%, and has benefited from ageing with strong fruity, spice flavours and lots of oak character.

There’s no kitchen on site, but there’s a basic bar snack menu along with food trucks during busy times.
