PORTLAND | Deschutes Brewery & Public House in Portland’s Pearl District is where those who can’t make it out to the brewery in Bend can go to find the best selection of Deschutes beers in town. The family owned and operated Deschutes has been brewing since 1988 while the Portland brewpub has been operating since 2008. The space is large, open and loud, and gets very busy so it can be hard to secure a table without a wait. Our recommendation is to head straight to the bar and grab some drinks – there are high tables and stools at the bar as well as food service if you manage to nab one, which is much easier than waiting for a table in the main section.
There are 26 taps which feature beers ranging from Deschutes core beers through to seasonal beers and one-offs, including beers brewed on-site that can only be found at the Portland brewpub. From the core range, try Deschutes version of the classic Northwest pale ale, the Mirror Pond Pale Ale featuring Cascade hops or the deliciously juicy Fresh Squeezed IPA, which uses Citra and Mosaic hops to create a fresh, citrus/grapefruit brew.
On the more experimental side, what’s on offer will depend on when you visit but if you do see it on tap, we highly recommend the Blindside Baltic Porter – slightly smoky with flavours of chocolate, dried fruit, toffee and molasses.
Also available are a number of beers in bottles, which feature some beers which can no longer be found on tap – you can drink these on or purchase them to take away, and if you want something on tap to take away, growlers sales and refills are offered.
Food is classic pub fare cooked using locally sourced ingredients and ranges from bar snacks through to share plates and more substantial dishes. Try the Spicy Fried Chicken and Waffle or Elk Burger paired with the fantastic hand cut Kennebec potato fries with fresh garlic, rosemary aioli and manchego cheese.
