MELBOURNE| Have you ever tried a cheeseburger dumpling? Now that I have your attention, feast your eyes and your taste buds upon a modern dumpling restaurant like no other. Drumplings on Bourke Street offers unique flavour combinations that trick your senses and push culinary boundaries as you double take each mouthful of these beyond ordinary dumplings.

Drumplings pink neon shop front is unmissable as you are welcomed into a modern yet retro space with printed pink pop art inspired wallpaper lining the back wall, with dark stained wooden picnic tables present over looking the kitchen. Dimly lit with spotlight lighting shining from the ceiling, candles lit upon tables and bright green plants scattered in each corner the interior resonates a summer vibe as the atmosphere is energetic with pop music echoing in the background, making for a fun social gathering ground.

The menu is filled with classic Chinese dumplings as well as Drumplings genius contemporary take on global favorites like cheeseburgers, fish and chips and chili con carne. Each dumpling is wrapped in thin dough filled with flavorsome fresh ingredients. The classic prawn dumpling and shitake mushroom dumplings burst with flavour but the global menu is the real highlight. The cheeseburger dumpling is crafted using a juicy beef patty combined with cheese and pickles, if your eyes were closed you’d never guess you were eating a dumpling. Fish and chips combined in a dumpling parcel, mash potatoes and beer battered fish seasoned with vinegar salt is quite an experience and chili con carne dumpling super hearty and comforting tasted like you were eating a spicy taco.

There are also twists on traditional classics, like the shitake mushroom dumpling which is drizzled with a vibrant pink tangy blood orange glaze, and looks as delightful as it tastes. Attention to detail doesn’t go astray as the bright colours and presentation of the dumplings look like art. The spinach and prawn dumpling, wrapped in a grassy green coloured dough and bursting with hints of ginger and sesame dressing is another highlight. Drumplings side dishes are also a showstopper – for example their take on fries are crispy salted pork crackling bites which literally pop in your mouth. The pickled zucchini salad meanwhile acts as a pallet cleanser with its fresh vinegary dressing and strong aroma of fennel seeds.

If you have room for dessert, the Nutella dumpling filled with banana and garnished with walnuts is accompanied by a warm custard sauce, which tastes like sweet caramel. Or try the apple crumble dumpling packed with thick cut cinnamon spiced apples and served with crème fraiche.

Drumplings is a dining experience worth a visit, as the high energy atmosphere, friendly staff, offer for student discounts and delicious food is sure to make your interaction with classic and new style dumplings a memorable one.
