MELBOURNE | El Atino & Co. is a restaurant and food store in Richmond, that strongly believes in ‘sharing honest Latin food’ through the food they cook, the cooking demonstrations they provide and the range of Latin American products on offer in their in-house food store. Taking inspiration from their cultural backgrounds and origins, co-owners Alfredo and Martin have successfully created a vibrant and open-spaced venue where people can enjoy the true flavours of Latin America in inventive dishes, as well as take home Latin American ingredients, products and recipes, thus encouraging people to experiment with flavours and tastes at home.

The daytime menu at El Atino & Co. offers a varied selection of breakfast and lunch options, all of which highlight authentic flavours, but don’t necessarily fall into the category of ‘traditional food’. Adding their personal touch when it comes to ingredient combinations, presentation styles and fusion flavours is what they pride themselves on, and adds to the excitement of this venue.

Served in a large stone bowl with a fresh wedge of lemon, the Cochinita Tacos are a must-try. House-made corn tortilla wrap around slow-cooked pork in an orange/achiote marinade, finished with crème fraiche, raw red onions and habanero xnepec salsa. The tender pork thirstily soaks up the spicy yet addictive flavours in the marinade and the salsa, contrasted by the fresh crunch of the raw red onions. They also offer Vegan Tacos, Prawn Tacos and beef tacos should you prefers something different.

The Aji Amarillo Chicken-Salad Sandwich is a creative take on a classic chicken and salad sandwich. Tender sous vide chicken is mixed with hard-boiled egg, lettuce, cucumber and tomato, dressed with aji Amarillo sauce. The Peruvian flavours emanating from this chicken-salad mixture is what makes this sandwich unique, complimented by its rustic presentation and generous serving of fries.

Accompanying menus offering varieties of ceviche, while drinks and cocktails complete this Latin American culinary journey. Authentic ingredients that are rarely found in Melbourne, such as cactus and adobo, can be found at El Atino & Co. Their restaurant’s mission is to ‘share, teach and promote’ the cultural diversity of Latin American cuisine, as well as contribute to it by constantly evolving and creating new traditions. They have started opening for dinner on select nights as well, with a different yet equally intriguing menu, so now there’s even more reason to alight your adventurous palate and head down to El Atino & Co.
