MELBOURNE | FLATIRON Side Door is a local’s wine bar in Kew, designed and owned by husband and wife team Ben and Emma Bangay. It took two years to go from concept to opening with Ben, a production designer by trade with a family background in wineries and horticulture, doing most of the handiwork himself. We were invited to check out the space by Emma, who told us how she and Ben created Side Door with the aim of it being like an extention of their home. Ben and Emma want customers to feel like they’re walking into a friend’s lounge room.
The space is both industrial yet cozy – with low lighting, stools, and purple lighting towards the bar giving way to comfy booths, seats and tables. A door leads to a spacious courtyard which feels like a backyard, complete with wooden furniture, greenery and homely additions. The music selection is of note too – when we visited it was a fantastic selection of 70s and 80s R&B and soul hits.
The main focus at Side Door is wine, with a small cheese, charcuterie and pizza menu for those looking for a bite to eat. The wine selection is mostly local, and features wines from wineries like Mac Forbes that Ben has visited and cultivated relationships with over the past few years. There are also a few interesting international wines like French Burgundy and Italian Suave. There are also a few cocktails on offer.
The cheese selection is fantastic and, like the wine list, features mostly local cheeses with some imported specialties. For pizza, it’s a mixture of familiar and unfamiliar toppings – the prosciutto and rocket pizza is delicious, and there’s a blue cheese and black pudding pizza for those looking for something bolder.
