MELBOURNE | Future Mountain Brewing And Blending is a new brewery and blending room in Reservoir, and brings a beer offering to the area that’s a bit different to most.

Owners Ian Jones and Shane Ferguson met while working at Boatrocker Brewing and discovered that they both had a love of farmhouse beers and American-style sours. There was a lot of excitement about what these guys planned to do with Future Mountain before they even opened and, judging by the tap list for opening weekend, the hype has been justified.

The focus and Future Mountain is sour beers. The beers being brewed here take inspiration from new and old world breweries, with 55 barrels filled with all kinds of funky beers doing their thing. The result is things like “Fortune Telling Lady” – a 5.8% ABV sour cherry beer, and “Stranger on a Plane”, a 5.8% ABV peach sour. Full of upfront fruit flavour and complex, funky tartness.

The space itself is large, in a converted warehouse. A front bar is a cozy affair with low lighting, bricks, and greenery, while the main bar behind opens out into the warehouse proper and has the brewing equipment and barrels in full view. It’s a family friendly space, and it’s not uncommon to see groups of friends and families with young children here on the weekend.

A side room of yeasts, cultures and bacteria that have been cultivated over several years gives visitors an insight into some of the exciting things these guys are doing. Expect big things in the future.
