MELBOURNE | Gerald’s Bar has long been a locals’ favourite for those residing in Carlton North. Located on Rathdowne Street next to the famous (or perhaps infamous) La Porchettas pizza restaurant, Gerald’s is in a nice quiet part of the area and is a great location for a few drinks. We have now been a number of times and have always had a great experience although we would note that it can be quite busy at times so we’d recommend that you try and get there earlier in the evening.
The main feature of Gerald’s is their very impressive and extensive wine list. However, an interesting aspect of their offering is that the list of wines available by the glass is not fixed in advance and is decided by the customers. On any given day there will (usually) be three red wines and three white wines available by the glass and if you arrive early enough or if a bottle has just finished then you will have the opportunity to have the wine of your choice by the glass. We think that this is a great idea that allows customers to enjoy a quiet glass of their favourite tipple without having to purchase the entire bottle, and has on a number of occasions introduced us to some excellent wines that we had not tried before.
Along with its wine selection, Gerald’s also always has a small but solid selection of beers, which usually includes a number of local and imported craft beers. Given the rise in the consumption of craft beer over the last decade we are strongly in favour of the recent trend of bars and restaurants ensuring that they have at least a few quality craft beers on their drinks list.
Gerald’s also offers an ever-changing Italian-inspired food menu which ranges from small plates that can serve as a snack to tide one over while having a quiet drink to main-sized dishes. All of the food is designed for sharing and in our experience has always been excellent so we would recommend that you get a group together and order some dishes to share.
