MELBOURNE | I’m quite the fan of the light broth pho at GoodDays restaurant in Brunswick, so I didn’t hesitate to accept a recent invite to check out their new restaurant, Good Nights, in Windsor.
Owner Nam Nguyên’s second restaurant has a wider remit than the first, with an expanded menu that draws upon both his Vietnamese heritage and the flavours of the wider region.
The playful takes on various favourites are mostly a success, and there’s a lot to like. A highlight for me is the organic beef pho with rare Black Angus brisket, ox tongue, bone marrow, and ox tail. It’s an umami laden bowl of deliciousness. The grilled lamb skewers wrapped in betel leaf with a yoghurt and mala chilli sauce are another highlight. To me it was almost like mini bites of Greek-Vietnamese fusion. Very tasty.
Also check out the DIY rice paper rolls. I opted for the lemongrass beef (bo xao xa) version which, has a light flavour that combines wonderfully with the freshness of the herbs. If you’re a fan of seafood and that smoky wok char flavour, go for the mien xao thap cam. It a whole Morton Bay bug with glass noodles, chicken, black fungus, and onion. Really punchy flavours that come together nicely.
If you’re thirsty, the drinks menu takes its cue from the same playbook as the food. A mixture of classic cocktails and South East Asian inspired creations, along with craft beer, and an impressive natural wine list.
