SYDNEY | Since opening in Marrickville late last year, The Grifter Brewing Co has become a popular and vibrant spot for lovers of craft beer in Sydney. Located in the warehouse of the former Fresh & Clean laundromat, the large brewery and bar is a long way from the small scale homebrew that owners Trent Evans, Matt King and Glenn Wignall were making in their kitchens back in 2012. From kitchen to brewery via a tank at Young Henry’s to purchasing the old Young Henry’s equipment when they upgraded, it’s all changed very fast for Grifter.
Despite being housed in the shell of a warehouse, the bar at Grifter feels like a Sydney pub with its old school logo, menu board and welcoming atmosphere. The pool room hidden around the corner of the bar actually contains carpet that was pulled from a old pub nearby.
The tap list contains Grifter’s 4 core beers – a pale ale, pilsner, IPA and oatmeal stout, along with a few seasonal and one-off beers along with beers from other local brewers and gypsy brewers. It’s nice to see the guys supporting the local brewing scene and other brewers, and is representative of the collegiate craft brewing scene in Sydney. If it’s on tap when you visit, make sure to try the Demon Lungs, a porter made with hops that have been smoked by LP’s Quality Meats.
Unfortunately for non-beer drinkers in a group it’s a strictly beer and cider affair at the moment, available in pints or midis or in a tasting paddle of 4 ponies. A nice touch with the tasting paddle is that you order and get given a recipt which lists your 4 beers. As you finish one you go to the bar and grab the next, meaning each one of your tasters is served to you at the right temperature no matter what speed you’re drinking at.
There’s no permanent food setup beyond jerky and sauerkraut yet, but there’s always a food truck or someone popped up at the brewery taking care of food, and patrons are more than welcome to bring in their own food (and dogs).
