SYDNEY | The Grounds of Alexandria is home to some of the most Instagrammed food in Australia, but thankfully the food at this former Four ‘N Twenty pie factory, while certainly about image is also about substance. What makes The Grounds of Alexandria different than most cafes is that owners Ramsey Choker and Jack Hanna take their sustainability ethos further than most. More than just a cafe, the grounds occupies some 1,800 square meters of space. In this space you can find gardens, a small farm, a florist and a range of interesting spaces and ideas. It’s a beautiful area to walk through and a fantastic example of what can be done to an old industrial site with some vision and determination.
Coffee is considered from start to finish – it’s carefully sourced from sustainable producers, roasted on site (they have 2 x 12-kilogram Probat roasters) and fantastic. Any kind of bean you want brewed by any method imaginable is available to you here. The food is equally fantastic, with the seasonal, fresh produce driven menu options tasting every bit as good as they look. Even something as simple as a steak sandwich stands out with tomatoes that taste the way tomatoes are supposed to taste, eggs with yolks as yellow and runny as they are supposed to be and steak that tastes like proper steak. The quality produce is the star of the food here, and rightly so. Desserts also impress with a delightful range of cakes and pastries on offer. Service, while friendly, can be patchy simply due to the overwhelming hectic nature of the place – it’s not understaffed by any stretch of the imagination but everyone looks to be constantly under the pump.
It might not be central, but The Grounds of Alexandria is one of Sydney’s must visit cafes, and if you’re flying in or out of the city, there’s no excuse not to stop by on the way to/from the airport. It’s ”interactive, educational and fun” and we promise that the wait for a table is worth it. If you’re in a rush and don’t want to wait you can walk straight to the takeaway counter, but this a place that rewards those with some time to spare.
