PORTLAND | Hair of the Dog Brewing Company is one of Portland’s smaller breweries and is known for its unusual and rare beers that are produced using traditional brewing methods. The family owned and operated brewery has developed a cult following over the years, with people visiting to get a taste of brewers Denver Bon and Alan Sprint’s high alcohol, bottle conditioned, aged beers from the source. The brewery has 180 oak barrels used to age beer from 6 months to 8 years which results in some really interesting creations and 99% of all ingredients used in the beer come from withing a 350 mile radius of the brewery.

One of the most famous beers produced by Hair of the Dog is “Dave”, a 29% ABV Barleywine that was brewed in 1994 and sold for $80 at the time. The most recent release of this batch of Dave was released in 2013, and each of the 12 bottles on offer sold for $2,000 each, with a percentage of the profits going to charity.

When we visited Hair of the Dog we were thankfully presented with a menu that contained a wide range of beers ranging from the affordable to the expensive. Of particular note was the “Cherry Adam From The Wood” – the Adam is a 10% ABV dessert beer style that originated in Dortmund, Germany. The “Cherry From The Wood” version is aged with locally grown black cherries in Bourbon and Sherry casks for 15 months and tastes divine. Another great beer is the “Doggy Claws”, an 11.5% ABV West Coast Barlywine, made with pilsner, crystal malts and honey. Our suggestion? Go for the tasting paddle and try a bit of everything that’s on tap, then splurge on a bottle of whatever it is that looks particularly interesting to you and take it away to enjoy another day.

For those looking for a feed, a range of pub friendly food options and a decent sandwich selection is available. All food uses locally sourced fresh produce and meats – try the Turkey and Smoked Mozzarella Sandwich and the Chuck Norris Duck Wings.
