MELBOURNE | Hard Rubbish is a small bar in Preston in a space that used to house a fried chicken shop, a radio station, and most recently, a massage parlour (yes it was exactly what you’re thinking). It’s the baby of Kiwi brother and sister Charlotte and James Tizzard who, after moving to Reservoir, lamented a lack of the kind of bars they enjoyed hanging out in, so decided to open their own. The fit out is very eclectic, made up mostly of furniture and items they found on the side of the area’s streets (hence the bar’s name) and Gumtree. Think vinyl chairs, melamine tables, vintage lamps, and patio lights.
Hard Rubbish is all about good drinks, good tunes, and fun – a real local’s place with a great vibe and zero pretension. Beer is mostly local with a few kiwi options thrown in for good measure. It’s all craft, with a few taps and more options in the fridges from the likes of breweries like 3 Ravens, Hawkers, and Garage Project. Wines are again mostly local, with a few kiwi options, and are accessible and quality. For food, it’s a simple, affordable menu of nachos and hot dogs, and sometimes jaffles.
The music at Hard Rubbish is eclectic, ranging from 60s soul to 70s disco to 80s pop to 90s indie rock and everything in between. Fans of trivia should keep an eye out on the bar’s Facebook page for details of regular weekday themed quiz nights – we can say from experience that the 90s music themed quiz nights are great fun. One the weekends, feel free to have a dance on the tiny makeshift dance floor.
