SYDNEY | Hartsyard Newtown often comes up as a contender when considering where to find the best fried chicken in Australia. Indeed, it’s this reputation that drew us to Hartsyard in the first place. Long story short, the double crusted fried chicken served with a biscuit and sausage gravy is excellent – some of the best we’ve ever tried in fact, but there’s a lot more to Hartsyard than fried chicken. It’s a “seed and feed” restaurant, where owner and wife duo Gregory Llewellyn and Naomi Hart serve tasty American comfort food using the best locally sourced produce available. Herbs come from pots out the back while vegetables are harvested from a nearby garden.

Dishes are designed to share, with the menu being split into lighter “seed” and larger “feed” plates. Take a seat at the bar, or nab one of the 36 table seats. The is small and low lit and makes use of recycled wood to create something quite utilitarian that works.

The menu elevates comfort food, which results in some very interested and refined dishes. Take for example the cauliflower which is served with sunflower seed, brown butter, vadouvan, sheeps milk cheese, or the pulled pork with maple bacon, labna, apple. Yes the food has its origins in the comfort food of America’s south but it’s so much more than that. We particularly loved the school prawns with espelette pepper, yogurt and sorrel. So simple and utterly delicious. Drinks are more than an afterthought too, with a focused and well thought out range of tasty cocktails, craft beers and local/international biodynamic wines.

Oh and if all of that didn’t sound enticing enough, Hartsyard, unlike many trendy spots in this part of town, takes bookings.
