MELBOURNE | HER Bar is located on the ground floor of the recently renovated Pacific House. It’s one of four venues inside the multi-venue HER, from the team behind Arbory and Arbory Afloat. The others being the intimate, vinyl heavy, Music Room, casual Thai eatery BKK, and HER Rooftop. I recently attended the launch party, and accepted a separate invite for breakfast.
HER Bar is an all day cocktail bar that draws inspiration from the bars, cafes, and bistros of France. The all-day menu, developed by executive chef Nick Bennett and head chef Josh Rudd (ex Asado), features an assortment of French-inspired share plates. Think flank steak tartare with anchovy mayonnaise, and French fries, Gougère (baked pastry balls) filled with chicken liver parfait, topped with cherry and chicken salt, and Lyonnaise potato gratin. The gougère are a particular highlight – perfect for a snack to go with your drink.
Speaking of drinks, there’s an assortment of classics and house cocktails on offer – try the Green Apple Gimlet, and the signature French 75, which blends blood orange and hibiscus liqueur, Melbourne Gin Company gin and sparkling wine. There’s also a great selection of accessible Australian and European wines, and local craft beers.
If you arrive before 11am, you’ll find a breakfast menu, which features simple Melbourne breakfast classics done right. The hot smoked salmon with potato roesti, dill crème fraîche, and poached eggs is a winner, as is the bacon and egg roll with BBQ sauce, raclette, and spinach. Market Lane coffee, Mörk hot chocolate, and Larsen & Thompson teas round out the breakfast offering, along with a small alcohol selection.
