Hungry Wombat, Cairns City

CAIRNS | There’s so many great options if you’re looking for reasonably priced Asian food in Cairns. One of these is Hungry Wombat. It’s a small, family run Japanese cafe located in Orchid Plaza shopping centre.

Evocative of the kind of specialist hole in the wall spots you find in Japan, Hungry Wombat specialise in Sanuki udon noodles, a type of udon noodle that originated in Japan’s Kagawa prefecture. It’s characterised by its relatively square shape, flat edges, and quite chewy texture. The noodles at Hungry Wombat are hand made fresh on site each day. You enjoy them a variety of ways, hot or cold.

I enjoyed their popular cold wakame (a type of kelp/seaweed) udon, and the chicken katsu curry udon. Wonderfully textured noodles and brilliant flavours. If you don’t want noodles, there’s also an option for rice, but you really should try the noodles. There’s also a small selection of sides like tempura, and pickles.
