PERTH | Is Donburi in Northbridge has become quite the cult favourite in the five years since it’s been open, and the newest location on Newcastle Street does everything that the original does well. It’s all about Japanese favorites done well, quick service and reasonable prices. During lunch service, sushi and bento boxes are the starts of the menu, providing nearby workers a great option to take back to their workplace. Come dinner (and lunch if you’ve got the time) the menu proper is worth looking at.
There are a range of starters on offer, and the takoyaki (octopus balls) are just like the ones you get in Japan, a level of authenticity you don’t usually get at a place like this. As the name of the venue suggests, donburi (rice bowls) are a big deal here, and there’s a lot to choose from. Check out the miso chicken katsu don which features deep fried panko-crumbed chicken with egg and misonaise on rice, or the unagi chirashi don, with grilled teriyaki eel with egg, rice, salad and miso soup. Other highlights include the chicken katsu curry and the udon noodle dishes.
Is Donburi doesn’t try to be anything that it’s not, it simply excels at getting the basics right, succeeding in satisfying customers with tasty food.
