MELBOURNE | It’s Bagel is a popular CBD bagel spot that recently opened a second location on Southern Cross Lane. Owner Hena, who hails from South Korea, opened It’s Bagel with the aim of combining her love of bagels with her appreciation of the boutique bakeries of Melbourne and Seoul. I recently visited the new location for What’s On Melbourne to find out more.
It’s a small take-away focused spot, with a small bar with stools for those who want to dine in, and further tables with seating outside. Nine varieties of bagels are rolled, steamed, and baked fresh each day, available by themselves, or with fillings. There’s options like plain, blueberry, black pepper cheese, and everything.
You can combine any bagel with any filling you like. There’s classic cream cheese, along with flavoured cream cheeses like spicy honey macadamia, spring onion, and strawberry. For more substantial fillings, you’ve got 11 loaded options. One of the most popular, especially in the morning, is the ‘Brekky Time’. It’s a layered stack of grilled smoked bacon, smoky tomato relish, egg, cheddar cheese, hash brown, salt, pepper, and spicy honey.
For something more traditional, try the ‘Loxury’ – smoked gravlax salmon, cos lettuce, tomato, dill pickle, caper, white onion sauce, and spring onion cream cheese. Also keep an eye out for seasonal and holiday-themed flavours. During Easter, for example, It’s Bagel offered hot cross chocolate, and hot cross cinnamon raisin bagel, with coffee cream cheese added to the cream cheese options.
There’s also a small selection of cookies, espresso and batch-brew coffee by Supreme, and things like matcha lattes and house-made fruit-ades.
